Upcoming Workshops

The Winona Arts Center began as a participatory group of individuals learning and painting together. We carry on this tradition by providing a space for instructors and learners to come together to explore an art.

Additional workshops will be added as they are scheduled. Sign up for our e-mail alerts to get timely notification of new workshops.

Inspire: Gyotaku - Fish Printing

Our first workshop, Inspire: Gyotaku - Learn Fish Printing, was held during the Kids Fest at the Mid West Music Fest, on July 31, from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm at the Lake Park (near the bandshell). Led by Emerald Hulsing, a recent Saint Mary's art & design graduate, over 65 children learned the basics of relief printing using rubber fish. Emerald has led children's workshops at Winona's annual Art-in-the-Park festival in 2008 and 2009.

Traditionally done using real fish - dead ones - Gyotaku is a traditional form of Japanese fish printing, dating from the mid 1800s. Originally used by fishermen to record their catches, Gyotaku is now practiced as an art form, and is very popular among young children both in Japan and Western countries.

Inspire: Gyotaku- Learn Fish Printing was open to children of all ages, with no pre-registration required.

Inspire Workshops for Children

The Winona Arts Center is planning a series of workshops for local artists (visual & performing artists) to work with area children in creative, hands-on activities.

We have funding for five visual arts workshops and five performing arts workshops over the next 12 months. Thanks to a generous grant from the Winona Foundation, these workshops will be offered tuition-free to the children. Funding also covers instructor and assistants stipends and some materials, equipment and supplies.

Artists who want to lead an Inspire workshop should use the Prospectus rather than the online Workshop Submission form.
