About the Figure Drawing Circle

Winona Figure Drawing Sessions are held Tuesdays from 6–8 PM, upstairs at the Winona Arts Center located at 228 E 5th St., Winona, MN 55987 (the corner of 5th St. and Franklin St.). The cost is $10.00 per session ($5.00 if you’re a student). All money goes to pay the models and toward studio fees for the Winona Arts Center, so it’s all strictly non-profit.

We’re a relaxed group, where you’ll be surrounded by fellow artists, there’s music to listen to while we draw, and a supportive atmosphere. We don’t take attendance, so just show up whenever you are able.

The model is usually nude, and because of that all artists must be over the age of 18 (we do offer a Parental Waiver for Senior High School Students). The poses are done in a safe, professional, respectful studio environment (there is no touching of the models) and we do everything we can to make sure the models are comfortable and feel safe.

We usually do some 1-minute and 3-minute warm-up poses just to get loosened up, followed by a couple 15-20 minutes poses; then we usually take a 10-15 minute break and finish up with a 40-50 minute pose. Although, we can mix it up depending on the whims of the crowd and the model.

Feel free to bring whatever medium you prefer: pencil, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, and you can bring your own paper/canvas/whatever (although, if you forget to bring any, I’m sure you can borrow from others without a problem–I know I always have plenty to spare). There are also art horses, easels, and boards provided.

I send out the e-mail blasts Sunday evening/Monday morning each week.  The e-mail will generally let everyone know we’re having Figure Drawing, if the model will be male/female, and any other notes of interest. If you ask to be added and do not see it, be sure to check your Spam Filters, etc.

The e-mails will also have 4-6 pictures/memes/cartoons which most people seem to find amusing, so there’s that if nothing else!  (I have the sneaking suspicion that about a third of the list will never show up, but they just want keep getting the e-mail pics… not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course).  If you ever want to be removed from the list, just send me an e-mail and I will remove it right away and send a reply confirming I removed it.  It’s just that easy!

Alas, sometimes cancellations happen as well (we have had models call in sick, or weather conditions, etc.), and I try to get those out before 3:30pm on Tuesday at the very latest if I can help it, so it probably doesn’t hurt to check your e-mail before showing up.

We take a Winter Break in January and February, hoping to dodge the worst Winter has to offer; and a Summer Break in July and August, since many people are busy with other events such as Shakespeare Fest and working in their gardens.

As always, if you have any questions, please lemme know and send an e-mail to: [email protected]

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
